Spring Fishing For Chrome – Follow a bunch of Hard core Salmon bums to Ponoi
|
For many hours the helicopter carries us straight eastwards. Through the small windows we watch the mighty and endless Tundra. Beneath us we see massive herds of reindeers and occasionally a big Brown bear – A true adventure and definitely the onset of a lifelong memory. Ponoi emerges as a silver band just under the horizon. Since the dawn of time the heavy current has cut its way through the landscape creating one of the biggest canyons in Eastern Europe. From up here the Ponoi looks almost intimate, but once we are down and into our waders, we realize that Ponoi River is a king size river. Salmon angling with a fly is true passion, and in a river like Ponoi all your dreams come true. For many hours the helicopter carries us straight eastwards. Few Salmon Rivers on the Kola Peninsula, or in the world for that matter, have had such a spellbinding and deeply felt effect on Salmon anglers from all over the world. For many of them it has almost become a lifelong love affair and you may witness hardened and weather-beaten anglers become all “mushy”, when they reflect and talk about Umba. Such is the character of this river and there are really very few places left in this world like it. Read (more…)

Salmon Junkies like fishing with spey rods. Accuse us of being spey geeks, and you’re right. We’re not shy about the fact that we think two-handed casting is one of the coolest things around.
Here’s why.
It’s easier to cover the water with a spey rod. If you need to cast more than 20 feet to get your fly to the fish, you can do it with a spey rod, with less effort than with a single-handed rod.
Spey rods give better line control. Mending with a 13′ rod allows you to move more line than mending with a single handled rod.
Spey casting is easier on your body – especially your shoulders. You can keep your arms close to your body and still get the line out with a spey rod. – Read (more…)

Week 26 – Bernard Lunel tells – “My first and second day produced fantastic 26 Salmons between 8 and 17 pounds – all taken on small Billy Butt and Green Highlanders”.
On the third day I was fishing the Krivetz. We took position with Big Nick in the Office pool. By the third cast a fish came op to the surface to have a look to my fly as to say “hello. Here I’ am…”A new cast and at this time, the fish took the fly.. Then started the Rodeo…One, two, three jumps, and like a rocket heading for the big rapid below Office pool. My old and trusty Hardy Perfect reel was screaming, when I simultaneously desperately tried to control the fish, because if he reached the strong rapid. I could say goodbye to the salmon.. The line and backing…for sure a really bad situation. (more…)

Check out this list of the many Twenty/Twenty members – But don’t get me wrong – to become a member of this club was never, and will never be, an easy accomplishment – many of its prominent members had to fish hard for years, before they managed to get the magic twenty pounder and nineteen salmon.
But it was not ‘just’ the catch that did it – before becoming a full member you had to go through a small ceremony; drink a full glass of vodka with the small Twenty/ Twenty pin lying on its bottom – not before that was accomplished could you enter the Twenty/Twenty club.
Here are the honourable Umba Twenty/Twenty members – check out this fantastic list (more…)

I am sure that for most of you Salmon Junkies out there, January and February are some tough months, where it is a matter of survival, literally like the many Osenka salmon resting under the thick ice cover right now in Ponoi and Umba… waiting for warmer weather to continue there run to reach the spawning grounds.
Fortunately spring will soon arrive. I have been looking into our programme and handpicked some inexpensive but high value trips for you to consider for lower budget fishing. Fishing in some of the finest salmon rivers in the world, at only half to one third of the price asked by other operators on the Kola Peninsula.
Ponoi River – In Acha Camp you will find our comfortable camp located right at the awesome junction of Acha River and Ponoi River. Even in the early season the two weeks listed below will produce very high numbers of salmon. If you know how to swing a Spey rod you may already set aside two pages in your catch journal if you pick one of these two weeks. (more…)

What can you expect fishing the Umba River? Let me put it to you in a very straightforward manner – Umba is for the guy who is seeking demanding superior quality fishing. AND- Umba is also tough wading and long (healthy) walks. We have no fancy hovercrafts or jet boats, who can ferry you up or down the river the whole day – except on the lower beats in Umba where we use Jet boats.
The Krivetz River (upper section of Umba) is a fast river with strong currents, big boulders and strenuous wading on slippery boulders, long casts and monster salmon. (more…)
